Which are you? A Cat or a Dog Person?

So I saw this cool garden flag at the hardware store on Saturday and of course I HAD to have it. I came right home and placed it prominently in the front flower bed. It never occured to me that I might be making a controversial statement. I've got two black & white cats...the cat on the banner is black & white... it just seemed appropriate.

But I've gotten quite a few surprising comments about my banner in the last 2 days. "What's wrong with dogs?".... "You don't like dogs?" Things like that, and it's gotten me to thinking about the differences between dog and cat people. I did a little research on the internet and what I found out, is that people who see themselves as distinctly a dog person, are in general more outdoorsy, enjoying sports & athletic activity, & seem to have a large circle of friends. Dog people seem more extroverted. Cat people on the other hand seem more content to curl up in the house with a good book or a great movie, and have a smaller, more select group of friends.

But here's the deal, I think cat people can ALSO be dog people. I used to think I was a cat person, because I adored my cat and I generally admired the great qualities of cats... they're self-sufficient, inventive, independant... until my husband brought home this little white ball of fur who won my heart over completely. So I guess that just makes me an animal person, a pet person, I dig 'em both!

So do the comments about my banner bother me? Nah...folks who don't like cats don't really bother me at all. The only type of people who concern me are the "others"... the ones who hate all animals... dogs, cats, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds... everything & anything. Ultimately, they may hate people as well- because I have yet to meet someone who dislikes animals in general , who has a kind heart. Now remember, just because someone doesn't own a pet, doesn't mean that they hate pets. You know the "others" I'm referring to- those people who pass you on the sidewalk when you're out with your dog and look down at you like you're walking a scorpion. A wise person once told me never to date someone that didn't love pets, because they won't be loving partners. I think that very well may be true.

So how about you? Are you a cat person? A dog person? Both? Is it possible to be one of the "others" and still be a kind loving person? Let me know your thought. :)

  3. I used to be a dog person- now I have 4 cats-so I am a both person. Some people are just not flexible- They prolly don't mix foods on their plates when they eat either.

  4. I consider myself an equal opportunity animal lover. Unfortunately, I am allergic to cats, something I never knew until I moved away from home and my sinus issues immediately improved. But, I grew up always having a cat, so I miss them. Although, my mom's last cat was such a pain that I kind of forgot how enjoyable "normal" cats could be. I *love* dogs and if I *had* to choose between cats and dogs, I would go with a dog every time.

  5. I have three dogs and three cats. Dogs understand everything I say. Cats understand everything I do. They each understand their names being called. They all love comfort, food and being loved --- just as humans do. I think I'm a "both" person and, in fact, love all animals and birds, too. Sunny

  6. I am an animal lover! Cats, dogs, birds, fish... But I have 2 dogs & would have cats too if I were not allergic. I may have some mice but they have been the occasional wild guest & definately not domesticated. I know this because my boy-dog is a good mouser. I think he's got the "guests" well under control because I have not been the recipient of any "gifts" in a long time.
