If you remember, in January I sewed up some crib bumpers and a valence for the window with fabric we picked up at MaryJo's on our Black Friday Road Trip. We used a commercial pattern, McCalls 4855, which included instructions for a diaper organizer and rocking chair cushions, both of which I needed to get going on!

So here's how my version of the organizer turned out. Compare it to the McCalls version (in purple gingham below).
As you can see, I directed both my exterior and lining seams outward and covered them with bias tape. I think it LOOKS better this way, PLUS,it gives the whole unit a LOT more stability, so much so, that if my daughter decides that she would prefer to use it as a 'free-standing' organizer instead of hanging it by the straps, she can.

Additionally, I lined all the pockets with a coordinating color. Don't you just hate it when pockets aren't lined??? In addition to looking more professional, the lined pockets have a crisper look.

I also covered a piece of cardboard (a la the Harmony Handbag), to keep the bottom from drooping, no matter what is stored in it.
I'm pretty happy with it. I hope Erica likes it finds it useful!
Love the bag!!! You did an awesome job!
ReplyDeleteLove the diaper bag! Will make one for a grandchild due in August. Love the corner idea and will do that on a huge bag I'm making right now. A hint from me --- don't use cardboard for the bottom; use a plastic mesh (Jo-Ann's in the craft areas) and cover it on top and bottom with a small side open but tucked under. That way the bottom won't 'smell' and can be taken off to wash.
ReplyDeleteThat plastic mesh bottom tip was truly inspired!
ReplyDeleteyes I agree- this the plastic mesh idea is a great idea for a diaper bag. If I ever make a diaper bag, I'll remember this!
ReplyDeleteThis however is a diaper organizer, its a place where you can store everything to do with diapering, so you have it at your fingertips, not struggling to find it or reach it while dealing with a wriggling baby. It is NOT a place to put a dirty diaper. (at least i dont want to know about if a dirty diaper is put in there!) hahahah
The Organizer is terrific and such a handy item for the nursery! Love the colors.
ReplyDeletePS the critter story was a hoot!
Will you add this as a pattern in your catalog? I'd buy it over the McCall's any day.
ReplyDeleteNah... thanks a bunch, but i don't see a diaper bag in my future. I generally recommend that folks find a large diaperbag that suits their needs and then place their PortaPockets Insert (or Encore) INSIDE it, so they need only carry the one item, yet still have everything they need.
ReplyDeleteSorry! I didn't mean there would be dirty diapers in there! Often the inside bottom get soiled, maybe with lotion spills and drips plus other items stored in there. I will definitely make one for my grandchild expected in August.
ReplyDeleteYes, I love the bright colors and way you finished it with binding!! I know Erica will love it.
