We spent today very pleasantly, visiting with some friends in the beautiful North Carolina mountains today, hence I am quite late posting this week's question of the week, but here it is nonetheless...
Are you a cat or a dog person?
I guess it's no secret that I'm partial to pets of the feline persuasion, but that's certainly not because I don't like dogs. I like dogs a lot, as a matter of fact, I've had several that I have loved very dearly.
For me, it's more a matter of lifestyle. Cats fit my lifestyle better. My cats are with me around the clock, but generally in an undemanding way. They love to play, but most of the time, they're OK with it if I'm just not in the mood to play today. They're just as happy sleeping close by for now.
Cats don't have to be walked. There's no bundling up for walks in the rain, in the snow, in the dark, or in the blistering heat. Cats are OK if I decide to make a run down to Raleigh tomorrow, or if I'm late getting home tonight. They won't be pacing the floor because they need to go outside.
At this stage of our lives, my husband and I are much more spontaneous than we were when our daughter lived at home, and cats are much less creatures of routine than dogs. Do they smother me with kisses when I come home... well no... but they do meet me at the door. They are very excellent studio companions and they make me laugh every day. The fact is, cats are perfect for us right now, and that's OK. So for now, I'm a cat person and for the record, I'm crazy about my two knuckleheads!
But how about you? A cat person... or a dog person? Which is it?

Right now I would have to say am a dog person. My family adopted a dog a few years back from the pound, the day before they were to put him to sleep. This dog has been at my mom's side now that she is ill and cant speak or do for herself. When isn't with her he is with me under my sewing table making sure the fabric monsters dont get me. As for cats I would love to have anther cat. Both dogs and cats have a place in my life.
ReplyDeleteI would say I am a little partial to cats because they are easier to look after. However, I have two dogs and two cats.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say both ... I don't have a dog right now, my Daisy (a yellow Labrador) passed away almost a year ago. I have 3 cats that I adore tho ... they are wonderful kitties and when Daisy died, they looked all around the house for a couple of weeks looking for her. I love my kitties, King Louie Bean, Ernie Birt Bean and Isybelle Bug Bean!
ReplyDeleteI have to say I'm a dog person; lost my special person a couple of years ago and haven't been able to bring myself to get another one yet (but I already share a dog with my Dad and another one with my daughter's family so I'm certainly not without). Have never had a cat (I'm dreadfully allergic to them) so I can't comment on them.
ReplyDeleteI have both but our cat must be outside because of family allergies. I spoil her all I can from afar. We rescued an adult dog three years ago and have become a total 'nut' over her :-) Push rescuing adult dogs all I can.
ReplyDeleteI WAS a cat person until I got my dogs - and I have to say, it is wonderful to have a well-behaved, well-trained dog - but it takes a lot of work to train a puppy!
ReplyDeleteI am a dog person! I have always loved them. We have 3 big dogs outside (no inside ones, hubby doesn't like house pets).
ReplyDeleteDefinitely CAT!!! I had a cat, a saddleback just like yours, and she was MY baby. We named her Shogi, after seeing a penguin named Shogi. Shogi and I were 'joined at the hip'. Everywhere I sat, she sat next to me. On weekends when I slept in, she would wait for me beside my bed and if I slept in too long, she'd nudge my arm. I lost her after 20 years. I'm retired now and moved to a peaceful 1/3 acre paradise. Missing my Shogi intensely when one day a feline friend wandered into our yard and adopted us. She gardens with me and loves to play hide and seek in the tall grass. We named her Buffalo (and call her Buffy) because she is humongous and roams in our 'prairie'. Yes, I am definitely a Cat Person.
ReplyDeleteA cat person! Independent, neat and clean and they do such funny things! Nothing is better than a cat sitting on my lap purring (my grandchildren are too old for grandma's lap!) A cat and a book in the evening. Very relaxing. Don't forget the fun, chasing toy cars, batting at strips, hiding from me; they do all the good things, then sleep peacefully!
ReplyDeleteI've been saying this for years to everyone that I'm a dog person, so I guess I must be that. I moved out of my parent's house about 4 years ago after college. Our dog lives there. I love him to bits.
ReplyDeleteBut the sad part is where I'm currently at, I can't own a dog. As much as I'd love bring one home, it just won't be fair on him. I have to work and that means I'd be gone 10 hours a day... So a getting a dog home is completely out of the question... And Its always likely going to be the same unless I give up my job and take up free lancing or something.. (which is likely not going to happen... I like my stability here...)
Ok.. the point I'm getting at is.. I totally loved your post today!!
I never thought about owning a cat! I mean I do think they're a bit unpredictable (I can't tell a sign when a cat's going to bite/paw me) but these characteristics you mentioned are so cool... obviously it may not be so nice to get one home if I'm gone 10 hours straight... but I certainly now can start thinking of owning a pet... all thanks to your post!!!
Thanks for giving me new hope :)
I have always been a crazy cat lady -- even though for 9 years after I got married we had a dog -- cats were not allowed.
ReplyDeleteI bugged my husband until we got a cat, though he said Sunny was "your cat" and "you have to take care of it." Couldn't even call the cat by his proper name.
After 3 weeks, my hubby and the cat made friends and he has been a "cat man" ever since. Even had a "cat-dog" for a few years that stayed outside because he was a stray. We called Freckles a "cat-dog" because he would follow my husband around like a dog whenever he was outside. Freckles liked to ride in the car and would even go for a ride to the store.
Sadie, I couldn't help but laugh when you mentioned "owning" a cat! Anyone that has ever had a cat living with them, will tell you that as far as cats are concerned we live to serve them. I was teasing my DH about getting a pet door. He pointed out that we already have a pet door...there's simply a doorknob on it!
