Question of the Week #12

OK- so you probably noticed that we took a week off from the Question of the Week because of the Spring Quilt Market, but it's Sunday again and we're ready to go with a new question-

Question of the Week #12-
What are you using, that's broken?

My hairdryer is kinda broken, not completely, but some of the features I like are shot. It only works on high now, (which is annoyinig because that means I have to finish with a different hair dryer that DOES work on low), and the cool button doesn't work anymore. Additionally, every once in a while, it throws the little button on the wall plug, which means I have to stop and push that little red button to get it to go again. Additionally, the little black directional thingey on the front end won't stay on good anymore. If it touches anything, and I do mean ANYTHING (including hair), it flips off the dryer making LOUD clanging noises on the bathroom tile (this REALLY annoys the hubster).

So why do I keep on using it?

I am a total creature of routine, and this old hairdryer is simply the best hairdryer I've ever had. Rarely do I have a bad hair day when I'm using this trusty classic. I've tried to buy a new one just like it, but i cannot find one. I've tried my husband's but it horrible. No wonder his hair looks bad at times! You should see how MY hair looks when i use it! I've tried my neighbor's but it just runs too hot (as most do) and that just makes my hair dry and out of control.
But... I guess i better get my butt in gear and start shopping, unless of course anyone knows how to fix THIS one?   :)

So, how about you? Are you still using something that's really broken?

  1. The original remote for our TV has the batteries held in with rubberbands. We only need it when we want to watch something live while TiVo is recording another program --- or we want to watch a DVD. Since we don't spend time watching live TV or DVDs often, we 'put up' with it.

Using something that's broken . . . .well, not an appliance or tool, but clothing, yes.

I have a small collection of Hawaiian-style shirts and drop them off at the laundry/cleaners when they need washing; iron, light starch. However, as anyone who's sent things to the laundry know, they are rather hard on buttons.

So, all of my Hawaiian shirts have broken or missing buttons. It wasn't much of an issue since I tend to wear them as a over shirt with a coordinating tank top (summer) or long-sleeved T (winter) underneath.

But, since I've lost a few pounds since last Spring's knee replacement, I can just wear them as shirts....if they only buttoned.

I love these shirts; picked most of the fabric for them to be made (at www.alohaland.com), so they have great sentimental memories to me.

And, between being inches and inches too big and the damaged or missing buttons, they are, in a way, broken.

Will I throw them out or recycle by donating them? Certainly not!

    I have a plan!

The buttons can be replaced and I'm plotting how to take in the shoulders, side-seams, sleeve width length, and probably some of the shoulder to bottom length as well. For some, the center fronts will need some strengthening as well. Most of the shirts' fabric overall integrity is pretty good.

A couple of shirts are getting so fragile that I may just putthem away. One is my first such shirt, of a block-print batik of a white surfing frog on black fabric. The other one is the softest cotton (always was)in the "Surf Shack" print --surf boards stacked against a palm-tree-leaf covered shack against a black background, no longer available. You just can't part with suchgreat fabric.

So, I'll get these fixed up and probably make some more. One just doesn't toss Hawaiian shirts, ya know!

Yeah, I'm using something that's broken.....my sewing machine. The circuit board on the left side is out and I'm waiting for a new one to come in, but in the mean time I'm still sewing.

But, my speed control buttons are kaput. My stitch restart button which also moves my hoop out of the way when I'm embroidering so I can change the bobbin isn't working. I can't lower the presser foot manually, I can't "fix" a stitch at the beginning of the stitch so that it won't unravel. I can't baste around embroidery designs which is really annoying when I don't want to hoop something like towels and would prefer to baste them to the stabilizer instead.

But I keep working around these things and I keep on using that machine to sew, even though I have other sewing machines. And I waited far too long to call my repair tech to order the part I need for the sewing machine.

Once it's fixed, I'll probably forget that all those button now work!

Love the reports from Mpls. Used to live there. I did write you a note and suggested things for you to do, but the computer crashed and ate it, sorry. Hope you got to the Walker Art Museum. It was the first museum in the country devoted entirely to modern art, in the midwest no less.....and it opened in 1935. They have wonderful shows there. One of the best I remember seeing was Dennis Hopper's private art collection. It filled the museum.

Love your blogs. Keep up the good work.
