Purse Pattern Chronicles- The Sequel
(This post is part of a continuing series focusing on the development of a new handbag pattern from its initial conception to it's release.)OK-so as promised, I'm happy enough with my pattern design at this point to move along to the next step... making up a show sample in good fabric.
And here's the deal. Every time I release a new bag pattern I am flooded with questions such as;
- where I got the fabric?
- what fabric line is it from?
- Is the fabric still available?
So this time, I'm making an effort to tell you the name of the fabric and where I got it from. (Of course I can't guarantee how long the fabric will be available, so if you like it, hop to it my friend!)
The fabric I chose to use first, is an Australian aboriginal design that I purchased from Material Girl Quilts. If a fabric store near you carries fabric from the M & S Textile Australia line, then you might find it locally.

I opted to increase the width of the cotton piping on this sample to 3/8", and I am THRILLED with the result. This is exactly the look I was after and it's as close as I think I'm going to get to the balloon edge finish I had envisioned.
( Click here to compare this look with the 1/4" piping from my last sample.)

And here's your first real look at the 'kangaroo-style' pouch on the front of the bag. Equally accessible from both the right and left side, it's the perfect place to stow your keys, or anything else you need quick access to (even your can of mace!)
So here you have it... the first finished sample of my new pattern design, which I've decided to name- 'The DittyRoo'. I hope you like it and now... let's make a few more samples until we come up with one that worthy of being on the cover!

Kathy, I love it! Good decision on increasing the size of the balloon. Another winner all around.
ReplyDeleteHi Pat,
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the new bag pics!
Love that Aboriginal print - really striking and so appropriate!
Looks GREAT & nice outer pockets...how large is it? also how many pockets on the inside?
ReplyDeleteYou can make either 2 or 4 pockets on the inside.
ReplyDeleteI just found an old blog, and probably shouldn't have read it. I, too am a baseball fan. Loved it as a kid. We had a baseball game that went on all summer long in a vacant lot. You'd come and go as you felt like it. We never kept score, what was the point? The joy was in playing.
ReplyDeleteEventually, the parents of two of the kids who lived next to the vacant lot, purchased the lot, leveled it and planted grass. We never played there again. It just wasn't the same.
I got interested in baseball as an adult when I worked on The Natural. It was a fun movie to do, and Bob can really hit a ball. He went to college on a baseball scholarship. I had to take Joe Don Baker out to the batting cages for practice until he got his swing back, too. We could never do anything with Michael Madsen, The All Star who had a very large role, but most of it ended up on the cutting room floor because he couldn't play baseball.
In the National League, I root for the Diamondback since I live in Arizona, but in reality I have only two favorite teams.....The Red Sox and whoever is playing the Yankees.
I did see that you're a Yankees fan. I forgive you.
By the way, the new bag is great! If you use a gathering foot instead of the ruffler, the balloons will puff more, but you have more control with the ruffler. I can hardly wait until you release that pattern.
