PPC2- Legacy at JoAnn's

Purse Pattern Chronicles- The Sequel
(This post is part of a continuing series focusing on the development of a new handbag pattern from its initial conception to it's release.)

I know there's a lot of you out there who think you just can't find any decent fabric at JoAnn's. Quite honestly, our local JoAnn's is truly a dump. It's not my favorite place to shop, but like many of you, I don't have a whole lot of local options.

Anyway, for those of you who haven't visited JoAnn's lately, they're carrying a new fabric line now called Legacy. It's higher quality than most of their other fabrics, and I used this combination for this particular sample.

I used the striped fabric in a chevron style for the front pocket, (and the back of the bag) by adding a 1/4" seam to the center fold line. The smaller floral print was used in the gathered trims, and the larger floral was used as accent on the front of the bag.

Here's a good shot of the "Kangaroo-style" front pocket of the DittyRoo. It's equally accessible from both sides of the bag and i love storing my keys there.

Here's the finished look. Now... if i hadn't told you, would you have guessed that this fabric came from JoAnns?

  4. I work at JoAnns and frankly, sometimes I agree with you. Our store is a super store and we have been getting some higher quality fabrics in our store in Las Vegas. The Legacy Studio was just a start.

  5. I have to admit, not all JoAnn's are created equal. While our local JoAnn's is the pits, the one in Rochester,NY near my sister-in-law's house is fabulous. How can they be so inconsistent?

I have 4 Joann Fabrics near me and each one is different from the other. I love the Legacy fabrics as well and am contemplating my first handbag project in that group. I will update you with my afterthoughts when done.

  7. We have a fabulous Joanne's in Maple Grove Minnesota - so many choices! And yes, the quality in the last 6 months has increased. I find many bargains there - especially in the drapery department which has great fabrics for totes and purses.

  8. I wish people wouldn't be so bias against JoAnn's. There would have been no way that I would have started quilting if it wasn't for the fact that I could afford the fabric. "Quilting" fabrics have taken soooo long before they started making novelties and panels. I have found wonderful fabrics from both JoAnn's and Wal-Mart that I cannot find any where else. I mix my fabrics. They also carry Debbie Mum and batiks. Is a $15/yard fabric higher quality? Most likely. But please, don't disrespect JoAnn's and WalMart fabrics. Every fabric has its use and mixing them up is great!

  9. I don't have a problem with the fabrics that JoAnn's carries- I know there is a market for the fabrics that they carry, and that there is a place for us all in todays market.
My big problem with JoAnn's is the way they keep their store like a dump... they way they do not keep their stock of supplies up to date... and the way their sales help is literally NO help.
Now I know that all joAnn's are not created equal, but believe me when i tell you, that the JoAnn's I have to deal with, is all of this and MORE!
