Purse Pattern Chronicles- The Sequel
(This post is part of a continuing series focusing on the development of a new handbag pattern from its initial conception to it's release.)So I had the pleasure of meeting Terrie Hancock Mangat at the Spring Quilt Market in Minneapolis. I totally fell in love with the color and abstract beauty of her fabrics and was thrilled when she agreed to a collaboration on my new pattern design. When I returned home with many delicious fabric samples in my suitcase, I could hardly wait to get started with them. The one I liked the best for the DittyRoo is pictured at right and is called quite appropriately, "On the Rio Grande".
It seems that everytime I look at this fabric I see a detail I didn't notice before. Check out the skinny-dippers in the bottom center of this sample!
For this sample, I combined this delightful fabric with two other coordinating fabrics (a turquoise polka-dot for the lining, and a variegated blue stripe for the edging), and the result I think, is really quite striking. I cut the purse body fabric in such a way as to highlight some of my favorite scenes (it was so hard to choose).
Terrie's fabric collections are distributed through "Free Spirit Fabrics", and you can click HERE to read a little post from the their Blog featuring Terrie's Spring Market booth that you might enjoy.
Free Spirit also likes to promote their fabric lines by offering FREE Quilt patterns especially designed for their fabrics. Click HERE to see some that have been designed to be used with Terrie's beautiful fabrics.
This fabric is so uniquely beautiful that I fully expect that many of you will want to use it in a future project. If your local fabric store doesn't carry Free Spirit fabrics, ask them why not? But don't dismay, listed below, you'll find a couple of online stores that carry this fabric line and I'm sure you can find others by googling either Terrie Mangat fabrics or 'On the Rio Grande' fabric line.

That is too cute... love the fabric!
ReplyDeleteLOOOOVVVVVEEEEE the new bag. When oh when are you releasing the pattern????? The Rio Grande fabric is fabu.
ReplyDeleteI'm off to the Long Beach Quilt Show on Friday and will look for fabric there.....a hint as to how much?????? please....... before I leave on Thursday morning.....early , very early on Thursday morning?
I normally say 1 yard for the exterior, (unless you are fussy cutting to get a particular pattern in a special place, like I did for this bag). You'll also need an extra 1/2 yard for the trim areas and 1 1/4 yards for the lining. I am recommending cotton only (or a similar weight substitute).
ReplyDeleteThe pattern should be ready in late-aug or early september. :)
