Question of the Week #18

This was a VERY special weekend in our family, because we had a bigtime- old-fashioned family reunion, which brings me around to this week's question.

Question of the Week #18-
When was the last time YOUR family had a reunion?

Erica, Canaan and my Dad
The cool thing about a reunion is that it provides an opportunity for a blending of the generations. This reunion united the members of my Dad's family, which has it's origins in Canada. Pictured here is my Dad (the family patriarch), along with my grandson, the youngest and newest family member and my daughter Erica.
My son-in-law Steve & my 2nd-cousin Matt... or is it Kyle?  :)

Somehow we picked what ended up being the hottest weekend of the century to have our reunion, so we set up the pingpong table in the garage, which isn't air-conditioned, but is definitely cooler than it was outside. I peeked in at one point, and there appeared to be some SERIOUS pingpong going on... WAY out of my league!
My hubster is totally unaffected by the heat.

Of course some folks like it hot... my husband for one. But I also noticed that the ones who seemed OK in the heat, were quite appropriately, the in-laws... those born and raised here in the South. Not a surprise I suppose. I guess I'll just never get used to 99 degrees with 82% humidity. :(
My brother-in-law David stood in front of the grill for an hour!

Case in point- here's my brother-in-law bravely 'cheffing-it-up" in front of a hot grill. He actually said he wasn't all that hot... (He was born and raised in Spartanburg, SC... what can I say? I think I'd have passed up half-way thru the cooking.
Me & my sis-in-law Lina

We had all the usual fixin's. Hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and of course, watermelon. Now don't go adjusting the color on your screen. This watermelon actually had a yellow interior. We were told it was sweet and smooth and it WAS!
A proper family picture

And here's our whole crew, gathered for a picture to commemorate the day. Yeah- we clean up pretty good for a group shot, don't we?
A more appropriate picture

The only thing is... here's how we looked not 5 minutes later. As you can tell, we really had a pretty good time, and we're already making plans for the next get-together... defintely NOT in July next time!

And here's a shot of me, my sis and my two cousins. I included it to see if you can figure out which one is my sister. (Here's a hint- most folks guess WRONG!)

  1. My last family reunion was at my Father's wake and funeral. I prefer reunions when the guest of honor is upright.

  5. Hmmm... I can't remember having a 'family reunion' since I was about 10 (so... 40ish years ago) It was my mom's family and they came to our house when we lived on the intercoastal waterway in FL. It did not end well.

But, recently, My family and I have been included in the family reunion of my wonderful daughter-in-law. It is her grandmother's family and they have generously accepted us as part of their family and include us in this yearly event. The first year I attended was about 7 years ago, I guess. It was before my son and 'daughter' got married. It was held here in town at her parents (we were also friends) and I had a really nice time. It was nice to be included. But, last year, it was hosted by my son and 'daughter' at their home in Bedford VA. I have since remarried (my first husband died of cancer) and they, again, graciously welcomed me, my husband and two girls into the family and told us that NOW we are officially members of the family and are invited to ALL family reunions! It was quite refreshing to be accepted by people who we really didn't know very well before that weekend, when members of our own families were not being so gracious to us since we married in 2005.

Anyhow, enough ramblings! Family reunions can be really great events and I enjoyed spending time with my son and his 'new' family.
