It's that time of year.
There's a chill in the air, and the leaves are changing, so that means that the fair must be in town. The northwest North Carolina version of the fair is called the "Dixie Classic", but my guess is that regardless of the name, it's probably pretty much the same fair that comes to a town near you.
Don't they ALL have games of chance, with silly stuffed animal prizes that are only fun to have while you're lugging them around at the fair?
and haunted houses with creepy ghouls....and things that jump out of the dark?
And hair-raising rides designed to shake and spin what little sense you have left?
and weird mutants of nature which are pretty much just optical illusions...
and maybe a little local entertainment.
This was a little band which specializes in bluegrass, which my husband loves, but I've never really developed a taste for...
And then there's the animals. Cows, chickens, horses, goats, pigs, sheep.
The usual farm crowd.
But if you're lucky, you may get to see something a little more exotic, like this camel, who was seemingly unhappy about providing rides for the kids.
Or this adorable Australian Tree Glider, who was enjoying the fair with his owner. Isn't he sweet? and incredibly soft as well!
And then there's the food......
Of course candied apples, cotton candy, hamburgers, hotdogs, pizzaetc etc etc
But THIS year, these deep-fried Oreo cookies were a big hit. You could also choose between fried Snickers, Milky Ways, or even Butter! That's right, fried balls of butter!
(Not for me, no thank you)
But the BIG taste sensation this year was this... the Krispy Kreme burger! That's right, a quarter pound of beef sandwiched between 2 Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
How does one hold this?
No wonder this little ominous guy was right next to the booth!
I don't know about you, but I'd have to think twice if I saw what this guy was serving up!
So there you have it. This year's Dixie Classic Fair in a nutshell, and as much as my hubster loves it, I can take it or leave it all... all that is except,
a nice, crispy, warm cinnamon-coated elephant ear!
OK-I'm ready to go home now!
:)

I love the pictures and the commentary. . . brings back a lot of memories. We have our fair here (So FL) in January - well, it takes some getting use to. Blessings, Janet
ReplyDeleteKrispy Kreme burger! You've got to be kidding! Good choice with the elephant ear. Looked like a fun day at the fair.
ReplyDeleteIt's Tom Thumb donuts for me. Just love the dumb things.
ReplyDeleteWe had our Fair in Sept. I help paint faces for CEF, otherwise, I would not attend. When there, Chicken Pot Pie and Funnel cake are my favorite, then there is an ice cream booth (Sunset, I think) is really good. Not all in the same day. In three or four days helping. Love your web site and all the info you give.
ReplyDeleteI would go just for the elephant ear!!
