Sage Advice

I've had a lifelong fascination with quotations, mantras, creative expressions - whatever you choose to call them. I've always been interested in the sage advice of people who were making a difference in their various fields of influence, because I'm passionate about learning from those that have come before me.

I've collected them from everywhere... movies, books, lectures, magazines...writing them down on napkins, programs, tickets, deposit slips... and from sources such as inventors, thought leaders, business experts, artists, creatives and also from a few folks that just might surprise you!

It's my habit to post them in various spots throughout the house so I'm constantly reminded to think positively...to focus on the big picture... and to not let myself get bogged down with life's disappointments.

So today, rather than bore you with too many of them, I thought I'd share 10 of my current favorites with you. (They're listed in no particular order, except #1 really does seem appropriate for these times.) I hope you find a few of them helpful, even inspirational...

1.   "A lot of good could be accomplished in this world if nobody cared who got the credit."  --Author Unknown

2.   "A designer knows that he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."-  Antoine de St Expurey

3.     "I will always be there in the wings saying, 'You need to be good to people. You need to take your work seriously. You need to have integrity. You need to work with what you've got." — Tim Gunn

4.   “Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise”  -Ted Turner

5.   "Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning." – Bill Gates

6.    "Nothing is really work unless you'd rather be doing something else." - JM Barrie

7.    "Don't simply retire from something; have something to retire to."  -Harry Emerson Fosdick

8.    "It's easy to fool the eye but it's hard to fool the heart." -Al Pacino

9.    "Every man is guilty of all the good he did not do."  - Voltaire

10.    "I like to dream, but I like to make things happen."  - Heidi Klum

  3. Your #1 is one of my long-time favorites.

I cross-stitched "Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted."

A similarly sage/snarky one is "If you keep doing what you're doing you'll keep getting what you've gotten."

Do you use Pinterest.com? Go to their site and type Quotes into the search box. Tons-o-stuff! I collect quotes, too, but my pinterest boards are just titled Amusements [Month Year] and are not limited to quotes.

  4. My husband and I always say, "it isn't work if you love what you are doing."

My favorite quote is from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"When it is dark enough, you can see the stars"

Something wonderful can appear just when you think life's problems can't get any worse.

  5. There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still. - Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States

There are many paths to the top of the mountain, but the view is always the same. - Chinese Proverb

Not all those who wander are lost. - JRR Tolkien

I work at a high school and it frustrates me to see the system put so much effort into getting into a 4-year college. There are many ways to be successful and not everyone follows the same path.

  6. Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions. - Albert Einstein

Since I'm a writer when I'm not making purses, I love this one. I just love Albert Einstein. Another favorite is "No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it."

Another one that I like, just for fun, is: Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff. - Alan Cohen

  7. There are tons of quotes I like.. "Let the beauty of what you love be what you do"...unknown; "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children" - Native American proverb; and "Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner of traveling" - Margaret Lee Runbeck. Three of my favourites.
