If you've been following this Blog for any length of time, you know that I always set up & diagram my booth (as accurately as is possible) in my studio, prior to packing everything up for Market. But here's the deal, I'm CONSTANTLY tweaking my booth arrangement. When I walk the floor at Market, it's with a purpose. I always take note of the things I like about other booth setups and also the things I do NOT like for future reference.
One thing that was painfully obvious to me in Salt Lake City last spring, was that we were starting to outgrow our booth setup. Of course I will resist the idea of going to a double booth as long as possible, because of the additional expense and equipment this would entail, but in my heart, I know the expansion is probably inevitable. In the meantime though, I'll keep modifying our furniture configuration to get as much useful space as possible out of our square footage.
In Salt Lake City(on the right), I pulled both 8 ft tables out to the aisles, and stacked my boxes in the corner between them, in effect adding 2 linear feet to my display. I enjoyed the extra space, BUT, I've grown increasingly dissatisfied with the stationing of our work table in the entrance to our booth. It seems like an ineffective use of the space, PLUS, I've come to the conclusion that it "blocks" a clear view into our booth, so I spent most of my spare time in SLC planning how I would change the arrangement in Houston, and here's what I came up with, below.

| This is our floorplan for our display in Houston next month. |
For Houston, I've gotten rid of the center work table, placing a 4 foot table perpendicular to each of my display tables. Our product displays can now carry over out onto these tables, PLUS, passersbys can now have an unimpeded view into our booth. The foot traffic pattern is still good. No one should feel 'trapped' because there's actually more room to move under this arrangement than our old one above and I probably won't keep that stool in our booth unless things get really slow (which will help).
Now, when I add the brand new shelves that my Dad made for me (more about these later), I can get a really good idea of how to arrange my sample bags so that they look their best, and be seen easily from many angles. And here's how my display will basically look when they ring that opening bell in Houston next month.
Just so you know, I was standing on a ladder in the corner of the roon in order to get this shot, and I STILL couldn't get them all in the picture, but that's OK, I drew a very detailed diagram, so that I can reconstruct this arrangement quickly when we get there.
You might notice that it doesn't look like I utilized much space out on the 4 ft tables, but I needed to leave room to conduct sales and also for my brand new notions display (more about this later as well). All in all, I'm pleased with how this looks and so it seems, is my assistant. I have every reason to think this will work well for us, but one thing is for sure... we've just about maxxed out our single booth floorplan, and pretty much any expansion that needs to be made now, will probably involve going to a larger size booth.
So, what do YOU think about this new configuration? Any thoughts? If so, please feel free to reply below.

It looks great!!! Have you thought about using black metal "grid" to expand your display?
ReplyDeleteHow about going up another layer some how. Commenter above had a good idea about using a metal grid to get more height.
ReplyDeletewell- the only thing is- folks like to handle the sample bags and that would be kind of a pain to pull them down, This is definitely worth thinking about though.

I think it looks really good Kathy, I like the open feel. If you're looking to fill up the curtains above the purses, what about a poster size blow up from one of the patterns, showing the kind of pictures and instructions they'll find inside - your diagrams are wonderful. Or you could even hang it on the outside of one of the four foot tables. Wouldn't it be fun to have a big picture of a class that has finished making their purses and they're standing there holding up their purses and smiling. Would need to be a professional looking picture though. This was fun to think about. Thanks, Mary B in WS
ReplyDeleteI like the new set up! It really gives a great view of your patterns and designs. Have you ever considered coming to the Sewing Expo in Minneapolis? That is coming up the second weekend of November every year and we have a ton of people who sew their own purses in this area.
ReplyDeleteWish I could go to Houston this year just to see your new booth.
Thanks Marilyn! We love the Minneapolis area and really enjoyed visiting in 2010 when the Spring Market was held there. I doubt we'll make it this year because it comes so closely on the heels of Houston though. Maybe another year?
ReplyDeleteI think you should consider adding back the stacked boxes in the corner. The height gives a focal center to the display and draws in the eye.
ReplyDeleteThere'll be LOTS of extra boxes lying around at market, so we may just do that Patty! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLooks great, but I'd put the newest at center top.
ReplyDeleteKat,
ReplyDeleteI love your new arrangement so much better. When I go to shows, I want to
be able to see into the booth before venturing in. Also, I tend to avoid
booths where you can't move around and you seem to have solved this with a
more open area to move around in.. Much more inviting. Good luck in
Houston.
Wish you would come to the Novi Expo in MI. It is held every Sept. Ghee
didn't come this year. Rosemarie in Romulus, MI
Hmm- you mean like as a ceiling?
ReplyDeleteWe're not allowed to display above the 8 ft mark, which would make them hang all in our faces, So I'm not too sre that would help us. Thanks for the suggestion though. Keep em coming!
:)
Hmmm- we're not allowed to display above the 8 ft mark, which mean they would most likely be hanging in our faces.
ReplyDeleteProbably wont work to our advantage, but keep the suggestions coming!
:)
I absolutely love this new plan. makes me want to get closer & ck it out.
ReplyDeleteMuch better than the old one.
Kat, not everyone can get into market when it is held here, since we are not vendors, but the Expo is open to all sewers and they spend a ton of money buying patterns at the event.

We have never done a retail show because of the difficulty of timing it with the Markets. Our stock and supplies have to shipped to Houston about 3 weeks in advance of the show, and then we don't receive them on the return end until 1 week or so after. So it's hard to Plan for more than one show at a time. The likely place we would do a retial show is Houston, which is the week after Market, because all our supplies are already there. We keep saying we need to do that, but it's so hard to get psyched up for another week on your feet, when you're already exhausted! Maybe next year..............

Could you maybe grow up? Elevate some things (not enough to block views from outside the booth) but just a small shelf so you could double up some things.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting Marion- We already have a full-length shelf running down each display table. But the table width (24") just will not allow for a third shelf. Additionally, the transient nature of our exhibit would probably make that ill-advised. There's are LOTS of people in the booth at one time, and we wouldnt want our display to be unsteady or precarious in any way. Since our booth is meant to be put together and taken apart quickly, we just can't get the degree of permanence we would feel comfortable with to add a third layer. Thanks for commenting though. Great ideas can come from brain-storming!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I like that there will be no "I'm trapped in here!"
ReplyDeletefeeling.......I'm slightly claustrophobic.
Looks much better with the floor space increased in the middle. I don't
ReplyDeletesee any Mezza Luna bags and I love mine!
Well- i have 25 handbag patterns now and a notions line, and I'm afraid we just cannot take everything. Wish I could!

Kathy, i have designed many trade show exhibits, both large & small, so I am going to point out a few things that may help you. When I look at your booth I see too many straps and not enough bag, The stands & straps take the visual focus away from your great work. Also everything is on a straight line, at the same height. I suggest that you alternate a stand with two bags with a stand with one, You would shorten the upper bag's strap, and hang both bags from the same hook, getting double coverage in the same space.
ReplyDeleteI see on your web site that you have a fax so I'll send you a sketch tomorrow. I am retired, not looking for work, just offering a helping hand....Susan Bragg....Arkansas
