(This post is part of a continuing series focusing on the development of a new handbag pattern from its initial conception to it's release.)
So, in our last post in this series, we shared with you the inspiration behind our new design, which we described as a "twisted improvement" on an old design. And now, we're ready to share the original sketches with you. (see below)
One quick glance will probably confirm that the old design we're revisiting is none other than our PortaPockets Purse Insert, which is without a doubt our most popular and most successful pattern.
I don't know about you, but I change bags frequently and they are all different sizes based entirely on what I'm doing, and where I'm going. Some are quite large, and some are VERY small. Sometimes a PortaPockets Insert is just what I need to organize my bag, but on the days that I switch to a large bag, it just gets swallowed up, so if I want to stay organized, I need to empty everything into the larger Encore Insert. And occasionally the bag I want to use is just too small to accommodate even a small PortaPockets, which I hate, because I feel SO disorganized when I don't have a purse insert in my bag!
But here's the deal, part of the beauty of the original PortaPockets inspiration, was that it would simplify the process of changing handbags', but let's face it, for me (and maybe for you too), that's increasingly only true if I stick to a consistent bag size.
As I snapped the Lego pieces together, I suddenly thought....
"Could a Purse Insert could be made and separated into several components that could easily be either 'snapped on or off' as the "need" arose?"
And now, thanks to the fact that we can now fabricate zippers of any length we need, the answer to that question is a resounding,
Sooooo..... without further ado, let me show you my vision of what the next generation of Purse Insert will look like and how it should function;
First of all, the main component would be a basic purse insert with a size very similar to our small PortaPockets. It would of course be constructed with Soft & Stable rather than fusible interfacing like the PortaPockets was, (or Peltex like the Encore Insert was), greatly reducing bulk in the seams.
But here's the deal, if I need to carry more stuff tomorrow in a bigger handbag, it won't be a problem for me! I can just zip-on an additional section to my purse insert, and voila, I'm ready to roll. And with our new zip-on/off system, it's easy as pie to add just the components we need... nothing more, nothing less.
And, since we've now included and can utilize components that are both taller and thinner than the basic unit, our new purse insert can morph into virtually any & every size or shape we could need!
And we didn't stop there! We've got some great new interior options to accompany our new purse insert, like
And Congratulations to"Swakins" for providing the most accurate guess in our Giveaway from our last post. She wins a FREE piece of Soft & Stable. Please contact me via email to discuss the mailing arrangements. :)

One quick glance will probably confirm that the old design we're revisiting is none other than our PortaPockets Purse Insert, which is without a doubt our most popular and most successful pattern.
But how does that tie in with our original Legos inspiration?
It's actually quite simple.
And here's where the Legos come in!
As I snapped the Lego pieces together, I suddenly thought....
"Could a Purse Insert could be made and separated into several components that could easily be either 'snapped on or off' as the "need" arose?"
And now, thanks to the fact that we can now fabricate zippers of any length we need, the answer to that question is a resounding,
YES!
Sooooo..... without further ado, let me show you my vision of what the next generation of Purse Insert will look like and how it should function;
First of all, the main component would be a basic purse insert with a size very similar to our small PortaPockets. It would of course be constructed with Soft & Stable rather than fusible interfacing like the PortaPockets was, (or Peltex like the Encore Insert was), greatly reducing bulk in the seams.

And we didn't stop there! We've got some great new interior options to accompany our new purse insert, like
- an all-new credit card caddy that you can take partially or completely out of your bag if you want to
- an interior partitioning option, which is convenient for taller, thicker items
- taller, deeper elasticized pockets in the tall unit
- a key snap
- and MUCH MORE!
So....
all that's left now if finding out YOUR reaction!
I would LOVE to hear your thoughts, so please feel free to share them in the space provided below (and if you come up with a compelling name for this pattern, I'd love to know that as well)!
And Congratulations to"Swakins" for providing the most accurate guess in our Giveaway from our last post. She wins a FREE piece of Soft & Stable. Please contact me via email to discuss the mailing arrangements. :)

Do you know someone who would enjoy this series?
Please feel free to pass it on to others in any way you see fit!

PocketPartz! Simply brilliant -- can't wait to see how it goes!
ReplyDeleteYou know what Brita... That's a pretty cool name! I'll add that to the maybe's! Thanks a bunch.
ReplyDelete:)
Fantastic idea!!
ReplyDeleteA great idea, especially using the soft and stable. Would be good to hold a water bottle as well, like one of the non plastic kind. My idea for a name is Zip-One-On Insert, or Zip-It-On Insert. Look forward to seeing the pattern. Linda Ross
ReplyDeleteI'm adding all of these suggestions to a list. I'm totally blocked trying to figure out a name this time so i appreciate the creative input! :)
ReplyDeleteha ha. "Blocked" out! Love it!
ReplyDeleteVery cool idea! Makes it quite The Chameleon, I think. ;)
ReplyDeleteOK, I'm sitting here almost drooling over this! I am looking at the original pattern, asking myself, why didn't I think of that? But so happy that you did! Can't wait to see the grand finale.
ReplyDeleteOh THANK YOU! I was so afraid you guys might think this was a dumb idea! PHEW!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get my hands on this! It looks like that tall section, or possibly the gap above the zipper, would be perfect for my Kindle. A size and a place for everything!
ReplyDeleteAll that's coming up for me in the name department is an old Burger King commercial -Serve it your way. I like the names above better.
At first you mentioned smapping the blocks together and I thought "oh Snappy Pockets". But then you said it would zip together, so that wouldn't work. Unless you use snaps instead of zippers. LOL
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea PortaPockets Expanders. Can't wait to see the final design.
ReplyDeleteThe idea is wonderful. I can't wait to see the finished product. "ZIP A POCKET INSERT" . "PORTA POCKETS PLUS"
ReplyDeleteI really like The Chameleon, (name that Frances came up with) and the idea is wonderful! a go-anywhere addition to any bag!
ReplyDeleteGreat, I have fabric on the table to make a PortaPockets Purse Insert, (a new purse from Christmas)and you are changing it. I did think this first version needed more card slots. I have several that need to be carried (not credit). I don't carry a large purse so the first design should work well for me. I'm glad it is you constructing this, go for it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I have actually had the same problem and look forward to making a newer version of the Porta Pockets with my soft and stable.
ReplyDeleteSwakins@aol.com
WOW! Thanks for all the great input! I especially like the PortaPockets Plus suggestion. I've been thinking it might be good to be able to tie this pattern back to the original some way.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much! :)
Great design - that's always been the problem that we all have - enough versatility to make it work in virtually any bag. I'll be watching for this one to come out. What I'm seeing a lot in our quilt store (I work for Ruth's Stitchery in Colorado Springs, Colorado) - we have a lot of ladies who make the large totes, but have just a large "black hole" to work with. This would solve many, many problems.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Barbara L
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment everyone- you gotta know this is music to my ears! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful idea!! And probably will become a best seller
ReplyDeleteKat, what a fantastic idea!! My into to you was with the Porta Pockets thru Clotilde, and I love this idea. I have made the Ditty Roo and find that the Porta Pockets isn't quite large enough. Thank you again.
ReplyDeleteJudy
Dear Kat,
ReplyDeleteYou are so creative and thoughtful. I think you must be successful just because all your products are wonderful. In addition I can see that you're a really nice (and fun) person as well. Keep up the good work. One of these days we'll run into each other at a show (I don't get to many, but figure I'll eventually bump into you. )
Have a great week and keep doing what you're doing.
Hugs,
Barbara L. in Colorado
GENUIS!
ReplyDeleteWhy not just use Morphapocket or ZipaPocket?
ReplyDeleteGREAT ideas Patti! Now I actually feel like I have a few names to choose from!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
:)
I immediately checked my bank balance to see if I have enough money to order this pattern. Hurry and make it 'cause I want it!!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, this is a winner! I normally am a "no commit" type of a gal, but I love this.Thank you for dreaming this up.
ReplyDeleteI love this and want it right now. I go from a mini purse to a business case to a regular purse during the week and not only will this work for everything, I can actually feel the calm this will bring as I don't have to go through a change checklist every day. How about Puzzle Pockets? LOL
ReplyDeleteThey are all great names, I have been meaning to get the pattern for ages, will definitely buy the new one no matter what it is called!!! How about Versa Purse insert.
ReplyDeleteLove this new design. I would name it Zip'n'go.

When is this new pocket insert pattern coming out for purchase? I can't wait to purchase one. When do we know the new name for it?
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you guys like it! Phew! Right now I'm thinking this should be ready for a release sometime in late march maybe. If not then in early April. I'm writing instructions now. That's the slow tedious part.
Delete:)
This purse insert sounds wonderful! I can't wait to see it. It sounds like you really did your homework on this one. And we will benefit from it.
ReplyDeleteHow about magnets instead of zippers?
